Janice Samuals

Janice Samuals  
Janice is currently working as a reading/literacy specialist in a school district in Suffolk County New York.  She has over twenty years of experience teaching students with diverse needs including Autism, students with learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety disorders and emotional/behavioral disorders.  She is experienced in working with students struggling with literacy, writing and reading skills (decoding, fluency, reading comprehension).  Janice is very familiar with IEP’s and working towards meeting student’s specific individual goals.  

Janice has been trained in the Fundations/Wilson Reading System, she has attended Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, trained in using Fountas & Pinnell benchmark surveys.   Along with being trained in these programs, she provides numerous scaffolds to aide children in learning.  She makes her reading/writing lessons multisensory – in math she uses manipulatives as well as meeting a child’s specific needs.  

Janice is experienced in test preparation for the ELA and Math state tests.  When working with English Language Learners as well as students with learning disabilities, she feels it is extremely important to provide visuals and multisensory techniques to support their learning. In her daily practice as a teacher, she uses many approaches to motivate and maintain appropriate behaviors. By getting to know her students it allows her to engage them and best learn their interests. She truly enjoys building strong relationships with her students and working with them to meet their individualized learning goals. When needed, she uses a positive reinforcement and a positive reward system to help with students’ confidence and self-esteem.  She is excited to help your child with his or her literacy and math skills.

Marnie Stein  
Marnie is a New York dual-licensed Elementary Education (Pre K, Kindergarten, Grades 1-6) and Special Education teacher (K-8), earning a Masters of Science in Elementary and Special Education from New York University – Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Marnie is a certified Wilson Language Instructor. In addition, she is trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach for remedial reading instruction. Marnie has taught in various school settings around the New York metropolitan area. She specializes in teaching students with Dyslexia and Language-based disabilities. Marnie's most recent teaching position was at the Stephen Gaynor School, a specialized school for children with Dyslexia and Language-based disabilities. Working in this unique environment, provided her with endless learning opportunities, specifically within the literacy world. As a certified Wilson Language trainer and an Orton - Gillingham trained specialist, she excels at teaching students who have difficulty reading. Her incredible intuition allows her to first recognize and tap into a student's strengths, in order to build their confidence and allow them to see that they are capable of becoming better readers.

Marnie does not take the traditional approach to reading remediation. Rather she draws upon her knowledge and extensive experience using the Wilson Reading System and Orton Gillingham programs to help students achieve success in reading. Using a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction, her lessons are interactive and tailored to a student's individual needs. She uses a team approach to collaborate with all of a student's providers in order to maximize a student's achievements.

I have an undergraduate degree in Childhood Education 1-6, and a Masters degree in Literacy with dual certifications: B-Grade 6 and Grades 5-12. I have teaching experience with students in both areas of my certification and have worked with students in small group instruction as an AIS teacher. In addition I have privately taught students during the summer months. I have experience with teaching Wilson and Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Instruction. (Guided Reading Program). My experience teaching students to prepare for the ELA exam has helped all of my students in receiving passing grades with high marks.

I can suggest trips for you and your child to make to improve their science abilities.

Autism – If you have just had your child diagnosed as on the spectrum of autism, you have a journey ahead of you. I can offer services of teaching you how to use social stories to help your child adjust to students in his or her class. I firmly believe all students can learn. AREAS: I tutor mainly at my house in Point Loma (San Diego, CA) but will drive if needed. I am also available in South Lake Tahoe (CA) in the summers. I teach in my back yard currently for safety reasons and have extra computers/ ipads/ white boards to have small groups as well.
